Uterine fibroids are benign muscular growths that can cause heavy periods, pelvic pressure, an abdominal mass or urinary symptoms. Ovarian cysts are equally common and most are functional and harmless, but a few need close monitoring or surgery.

Endometriosis — the presence of uterine-lining tissue outside the uterus — is an under-diagnosed cause of severe period pain, painful intercourse and chronic pelvic pain. Evaluation is based on symptoms, examination and appropriate clinical assessment.

Treatment is matched to age, symptoms, examination findings and clinical requirements. Options range from observation and medical treatment to a surgical consultation when that is required.
